Big 5 Pilanesberg National Park, North West Province, South Africa
5 Sleeper Chalets, Camping & Caravan Sites
The Bakgatla Resort is situated on the edge of the Pilanesberg National Park. This game reserve is in the crater of an extinct volcano which was formed by eruptions approximately 1200 million years ago. Home now to a wide diversity of wild animals which includes the Big 5. There are a number of Stone and Iron Age sites scattered throughout the Pilanesberg park. These offer proof of man’s early existance in the Pilanesberg.
The Pilanesberg Game Reserve is in a region between the dry Kalahari and the wetter Lowveld (as found in the Kruger Park) biomes with an consequent overlap of mammals, birds and vegetation species from both, in this transition zone. Animals such as springbok, hartebeest and brown hyena, which prefer arid areas, are here, living side-by-side with those that prefer the more moist-area, animals such as impala, thus giving a great diversity of species for visitors to Bakgatla and the Pilanesberg Game Reserve to see. The topography is really scenic, what with the high edge of the caldera’s concentric circular perimeter with forested ravines, bushveld and rolling grasslands.
Bakgatla, in the Pilanesberg National Park is approximately a two and a half hours drive from Johannesburg on good roads, Bakgatla is about 40 minutes drive to the Sun City entrance. Bakgatla Camp offers a variety of accommodation, 5 bed chalets with one bedroom with double bed and an upstairs loft room with three single beds, alternatively 2 bed safari tents. There is also a caravan and camp site. There is a restaurant, swimming pool, playground for children. Guided game drives in the Pilanesberg National Park may be booked in advance or alternatively guests may drive themselves.
